A Brief Analysis of the Influence of TITANIC to the New Age

摘 要:This thesis begins with an epoch-making Hollywood movie——TITANIC, analyzing briefly its influence to the century. Take one example, the analysis of Hollywood film that plays a critical part in the whole movie industry is of value for the film-making and for the better understanding from the perspective of audiences. Whatever its commercial value or social value, as a classic and meaningful Hollywood film, it not only extremely pursues aesthetics, but creates beautiful pictures by using high-tech, which eminently contributes to aesthetics of movie industry.

1  Introduction

1.1 The significance of TITANIC to the time

1.1.1 Background of the new age

We live in a new era. In such a brand new age, things are totally different, including business, life, and peoples views towards the future. During this process, what TITANIC brings us is actually more than we can imagine. From entertainment industry to peoples daily lives, from material wealth to spiritual treasure, there is no doubt that TITANIC plays an irreplaceable role in the new age.

1.1.2 The brief introduction of co-production company of TITANIC

Paramount Pictures was founded in May 1912, a month before Universal Picture, and it is the oldest of the eight major Hollywood studios. Since its inception, Paramount has owned a large number of theaters and a production business.

1.2 The production of TITANIC

1997 is the year to enter a brand new century. And in this year, an eternal Epic movie was produced, Titanic. Titanic is a romantic movie co-presented by the 20th Century Fox studios and Paramount, directed by James Cameron as well as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet starred in.

2 The process of shooting the film

2.1 The synopsis of TITANIC

The film started in 1912, the Titanic cruise ship sank when it set sail in the virgin voyage due to hitting an iceberg. As such a miserable background, it tells the story of two people who are in different class, poor painter Jack and noble woman Rose, abandon worldly prejudice, fall in love. Finally, Jack gives the chance of life to Rose, which is a touching story.

2.2 The strategies of director Cameron

During the filming, the director had to take great pains, so to say. It is known to all that Camerons three unwritten rules. In the first place, he pursued perfection at all costs. In the film Titanic, Camerons pursuit of perfection was at its best.He once took the special effects artists pen in the studio and drew the script of the props himself. In the second place, in his eyes, actors were props. The chief actress of Titanic, Winslet,(2010) once said:“ I would never work with Cameron again unless I earned a lot of money. In the third place, he believed that it was dangerous not to take risks. For many, who saw his willingness to spend years and hundreds of millions of dollars,“burning money”as a risk, Mr Cameron once said to this,“whether its a big production or small costs, its risky.”

3 The value and influence of the film

3.1 Success in the business

Basically, Titanic was created in a special era. Its great success in business and literature is far from an isolated case. Before the films release, Wall Street analysts said, if such a high-cost film, which reached over $200 million would be successful, it was destined to take Hollywood into the “high-investment, high-risk”dragons den.

Titanic is not only earning so much money at the box office and tears, winning the public praise, but also carrying the whole memory of an era and youth. Take Chinas film industry as an example, in 1998, the film market of mainland China was filled with Titanic movie upsurge. As the film was highly praised by the central leadership, Peoples Daily and GM Daily also reported on the filming and production of Titanic.(Zhang Zhe.2012)

3.2 The impact of TITANIC to the movie industry in Hollywood as an inter-era film

3.2.1 The achievement of TITANIC in Hollywood

On March 23, 1998, the 70th (1997) Academy Awards ceremony was held as scheduled. In front of the TV set, a record 55 million American viewers witnessed the accession of Titanic to the throne. The best picture Oscar ——Titanic. It took the highest production costs($two hundred and fifty million) at that time, and it was the very nominated film for an academic award as well as the highest grossing film. And it won 11 academic awards:the best picture, the best director, the best editor choice, the best episode award, the best music award, the best art direction, the best cinematography, the best visual effects award, the best sound effects award, the best sound editor choice and the best costume. Since its released in late 1997, Titanic had been a huge success, winning four golden global awards.

3.2.2 The influence of TITANIC to the Hollywood

For the history of American Hollywood, Titanic has become a highlight in the whole Hollywood film history. It focuses on the description of human nature, class and love. The film reflects the glory of human nature through the emotion and reaction of people of different classes on the ship in the face of death and how they behave when the end of days coming for them. And it mainly stresses the romantic and tragic love between Jack and Rose. The love between them highlights the most precious part after confronting the separation of life and death, which is the crystallization of eternity. Theres no doubt that Titanic has created a legend that will be remembered for a long time.

4 Conclusion

The influence of the film TITANIC is enormous to such a new age. Whatever to commercial value or social value, even about peoples love views, this film plays an indispensable role in our life. What TITANIC  inspires us is far more than we can think. Nowadays, still it is being shown in major theaters and invisibly exerts its function. As a milestone across the century, TITANIC stands there forever, witnessing the rapid advancement of movie industry in silence.

Due to the limit of time and my knowledge capacity, this thesis may exist some points where they are still needed to be discussed. If there are a couple of places missing, I apologize for that, and its true that such a topic deserves further study as its not totally complete and sophisticated yet. Besides, the related resources, which can be provided and available are not very much, giving rise to the consequence of lack of information in the thesis. So the conclusion of this paper has to be continually deepened in the future.
