R. J. Palacio's bestseller Wonder tells the inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman in modern New York. Born with facial deformities that have prevented him from going to school up until now, August is bound to meet with many challenges when he enters the local middle school. This is not only a big shift to August himself but also a struggle for his family, his new classmates and many other characters.

At the beginning of middle school, August is unavoidably faced with prejudiced classmates who are unfriendly and even mean to him. But he is able to win some hearts by virtue of his own bright and kind personality. Though there are occasions when he is so emotionally hurt by the school bullies or has misunderstandings with his friends or feels like quitting, he holds on to the end with the support of his family and friends. The shy, unconfident and sensitive boy August used to manage to build up spiritual strength and become outgoing and brave throughout the academic year. Moreover, people around August are influenced by him and become nice and kind.

Choosing to be kind is the important theme of the book. Not only is the theme weaved into the characters and the plots, but also the headmaster's thought-provoking speech directly and clearly conveys the message. How to use our strength, how to react to those who are different, and whether choose to be a bully or be kinder than necessary are questions worth readers' careful consideration in their real life.

With both the book and the film adapted from it warmly applauded by critics and audiences, there is no need to doubt whether the book deserves reading. I strongly recommend Wonder, as I am certain that readers will have an abundant harvest from it just like I do.
