【误】Thanks for their help, my English is much better.

【正】Thanks to their help, my English is much better.

【析】thanks for意为“因……而感谢”,而thanks to意为“幸亏;由于;因为”,后面可以接sb.或sth.。

2. 抽烟对你有害,你最好戒了它。

【误】Smoking is bad for you. You’d better give up it.

【正】Smoking is bad for you. You’d better give it up.

【析】give up意為“放弃”,其后可接名词、代词或V-ing形式作宾语;当代词作其宾语时,代词应置于give和up两词之间。

3. 我们不得不走回家,因为我们的钱花光了。

【误】We had to walk home because our money ran out of.

【正】We had to walk home because our money ran out.

【析】run out of sth.意为“用完某物;耗尽某物”,表示主动意义,主语通常是人;run out表示“被用完;被耗尽”,主语通常是表示时间、金钱、食物等的名词。

4. 老人在乡下过着孤独的生活。

【误】The old man lives an alone life in the countryside.

【正】The old man lives a lonely life in the countryside.

【析】alone作形容词时,意为“单独的;独自的”,alone作副词时,意为“独自地;单独地”,强调客观上只有一个人。lonely作形容词,意为“孤独的;寂寞的”,强调心灵上的孤独寂寞,在句中既可作定语,又可作表语。

5. 我们将尽自己所能来帮助这位病人。

【误】We will do what we can help the sick man.

【正】We will do what we can to help the sick man.

【析】情态动词can后面一般跟动词原形,但句中的can后面省略了动词do,what we can (do)在句中作do的宾语,句子后面接动词不定式作目的状语。

6. 请把你的词典借给我好吗?

【误】Could you please borrow me your dictionary?

【正】Could you please lend me your dictionary?

【析】borrow意为“借;借用”,borrow sth. from sb.意为“向某人借用某物”。lend意为“借给;借出”,lend sb. sth. / lend sth. to sb.意为“把某物借给某人”。

7. 我们应该好好照顾老人。

【误】We should take well care of the old.

【正】We should take good care of the old.

【正】We should look after the old well.

【析】take care of意为“照看;照顾”,与look after和care for意思相近。表示“好好照顾”用take good care of或look after ...well。

8. 她是什么时候旅行回来的?

【误】When did she return back home from the trip?

【正】When did she return home from the trip?

【析】return表示“回来;返回”时,相当于go / come back;return还可以表示“归还”,return sth. to sb.意为“把某物还给某人”。

9. 我哥哥比我大两岁。

【误】My elder brother is two years elder than me.

【正】My elder brother is two years older than me.

【析】elder意为“年纪较长的”,作形容词时只能用于名词前,不能与than连用。

10. 和丝绸相比,棉花便宜多了。

【误】Compared of silk, cotton is much cheaper.

【正】Compared to / with silk, cotton is much cheaper.

【析】compare意为“比较”,compared with / to sth.意为“和某物相比较”,常常在句中作状语。
