In 2012, I found a letter which was never opened. This is what it said:

Dear Sherri,

By the time you read this you will be 30. At the age of 18, I had so many hopes and dreams about your life.

Now I hope that you have traveled everywhere and maybe settled down somewhere in Australia, doing some research in the field of genetics.

I hope youre married to the man of your dreams. The man of mine is Gwynn.

Youll probably have two children.

If everything goes according to plan, youll be living in Australia in a big house with a lot of land, a dog ——a yellow labrador, Gwynn and your two beautiful children. Hopefully you have a career in the medical field, maybe doing research in genetics. Gwynn will be a computer programmer.

However, if things dont go according to plan for you, I wish you all the love, happiness and joy in the world.

Be happy and live life to its fullest.

Love,

Sherri “18”

When I read this for the first time since writing it, I was floored. Even now I still cant help but think this is really cool. I find it fascinating how the dreams of a young and naive (天真) little girl can become a grown womans reality. So much of what I wanted for myself has come true.

Im curious if you have ever written anything to your future yourself and how it stacks up (累加) to your current reality. If you havent, will you join me in writing a letter now to yourself in 10 years from now? Its an interesting little experiment.

A. Sherris friend. B. Gwynns friend.

C. Sherris mother. D. Sherri herself.

57. What does the underlined word “floored” probably mean?

A. Disappointed. B. Astonished.

C. Encouraged. D. Frightened.

B. To describe an unusual experience to the readers.

C. To show great concern to the woman named Sherri.

59. In college, Sherri is most likely to major in _____.

A. computer engineering B. medical science

C. children education D. business management

The role of women in Britain has changed a lot, especially in the last twenty years. The main change has been giving women greater equality with men. Up to the early part of the 20th century, a womans main role was to find a husband, produce children and do the housework.

Perhaps the most important difference today is that so many women work, even after they get married. Today over half of all married women now have jobs, and women as a whole make up over one-third of the Britain work force. This has changed the roles of the husband and wife. For example, many young husbands are now ready to take their share in doing the housework and looking after the children. And the husband no longer expects to make all the important decisions himself. His wife will share in decisions about money. In some cases the husband does not work but his wife does. In this case, the wife earns money for her family, and takes on the traditional male role.

There are still some people in Britain today who believe that women are less important than men, and that a womans place is in the home. But younger people usually do not have these old ideas, and young women expect to be treated as their husbands equals. The big problem for women today is that they need to be “Superwomen” to be good at their jobs and to take care of their husbands, children and homes. In short, they have to do with two full-time jobs at the same time.

60. What is the topic of the text?

A. The differences between men and women in Britain.

B. The great influence of women in Britain.

C. The changing role of women in Britain.

D. The equality of men and women in Britain.

61. Which of the following women can be called “Superwoman”?

A. Linda, an excellent lawyer supporting a happy large family.

B. Mary, a hard-working clerk who has got married recently.

C. Michelle, a successful sales manager who is also a single mother.

D. Joan, a promising photographer who has just left college.

62. Compared with the early part of the 20th century, the British men today tend to ______.

A. take on the traditional male role only

B. forbid their wives to work outside

C. make all important decisions himself

D. take their share in doing housework

Ive been an educator as scuba diving (水肺潜水) instructor for five years. Frankly, my friends dont know why Ive changed my job from a very high income position and chosen to be a scuba diving instructor. To be honest, it took me years to figure out this question.

When I ask my colleagues what motivates them as educators, they say they enjoy “lighting a fire within”. But not me. This never seemed enough to explain why I became an educator. Then, about 6 years ago, the simple answer came to me: Nothing is more important and enjoyable to me than learning while having fun. Teaching sport is the way that I learn and have fun.

Fortunately, I picked the best subject in the world to teach. For example, had I become a ski instructor, Id have taught nothing but skiing. The same goes if I had chosen the job of tennis or golf, even they are also my hobbies. But scuba diving is very different. One of the comments I hear from students is that “they never imagined theyd learn so much about different subjects.” Of course, they enter the class eager to learn a new sport, how to assemble (装配) the equipment and survive underwater. Yet, by the end of the course, they discover theyve learned a great deal more than just how to dive.

In becoming able divers, they explored subjects like physics, physiology and oceanography. Moreover, if they remain a diver and travel to different countries and experience new cultures, theyll continue to learn geography, anthropology and history.

67. Why did the author change his job and become a scuba diving instructor?

A. He enjoyed “lighting a fire within” the students.

B. He couldnt find a sense of achievement in his former job.

C. He can learn and have fun while teaching scuba diving.

D. He was offered low salary by his former boss.

68. Why did the author say scuba diving was the best subject to teach?

A. Teaching other sports is not his hobbies.

B. Both students and the author can learn a lot from it.

C. Teaching scuba diving gives him a higher salary.

D. Teaching skiing is considered very dangerous.

69. Students can learn the following from scuba diving Except ________.

A. diving skills and how to assemble equipment

B. various cultures of different countries

C. subjects like physics, chemistry and math

D. knowledge about geography and history

70. What can we learn from the text?

A. The author used to teach skiing, tennis and golf.

B. The author wasnt clear why he changed his job at first.

C. The authors friends were in favor of his idea to change his job.

D. The author could have fun and learn a lot in his former job.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

People living in the flat can also have a garden because a balcony is never too small to add a garden.

Plan your garden to take advantage of the balcony exposure (朝向). 71 Cool-weather crops such as lettuce also do well with an eastern exposure that gets most of its direct sun in the morning, since leafy vegetables tend to go to seed rather than maturing if theyre grown in a desert climate or with hot afternoon sun on them. A southern exposure permits almost anything. 72 Root vegetables, such as long carrots and most potatoes, require soil depths that you really cant get in a container-based garden.

Line up your containers according to size and list a crop for each container. 73 For example, radishes or herbs grow nicely in a long flower box only a few inches deep. Bell peppers need more depth and plenty of horizontal space to spread out, so you place them in 5-gallon containers.

74 Read planting instructions or ask the nursery worker to determine how many plants you should start with in each container for each type of vegetable.

Let the starter plants sit for 24 hours in their nursery containers to allow them to recover from handling. 75 Make holes in the potting soil and transplant your starter plants.

Now enjoy your balcony garden and wait for a good harvest.

A. But youd better stay away from tall crops such as corn if you have limited space.

B. Write the container size in a notebook with the vegetable or herb.

C. During that time, fill your growing containers half to two-thirds full of potting soil.

D. Take your notebook to the nursery.

E. Select a container that has a large opening.

F. An east-facing balcony can grow flowers, herbs, and smaller vegetables.

G. Cut a hole in the bottom of the container
