(一)My Opinion on Fast Food
Fast food develops fast nowadays because it is economic, convenient and there are kinds of food meet different flavors. It will become more and more popular in the future.
However, I dont think eating too much fast food is good for our health. Fast food may cause illness. I admit that fast food is cheap and convenient. You can fill your stomach easily without paying too much. And you dont have to pretend to be graceful when you do want to. Different flavours meet different tastes. You can decide what you want to eat. But every coin has two sides. Fast food also has troubles. The most worrying one is whether fast food is clean or not. In order to gain a greater profit, some snack bars try every means to reduce the cost. Some even adopts illegal means. As is reported on TV and newspaper, many snack bars use some dirty refined oil to cook the meals. It is not easy for the customers to be aware of what they are eating. Usually there will be lots of bacteria in such kind of oil. These bacteria can cause deadly diseases, such as cancer. The customers become victims of the snack bars. Maybe you will ask,“What about KFC or Mc Donalds? The sanity equipments are good in these restaurants.” My suggestion is that youd better eat less. Foods in KFC and Mc Donalds contain much fat. They also cause health problems.Eating too much fried chicken, fried chips, hand burgs and something else may make you fat.
In a word, I dont suggest people eat too much fast food. You have much to concern about when you are having fast food. To keep healthy, we have to pay attention to our habit of diet.
(二)A Water Clock
The water clock has three parts. On the left is a tank holding water. This tank has a narrow opening through which water drips into a second container, also a tank. Inside the second tank is a floating object, to the end of which is attached a long pole with an arrow. On the right is a cylinder with the numbers one to twelve written on it. As the water from the tank on the left drips into the second tank, the level rises and with it the I foating object. This causes the arrow to move from one number to the next. One thus has a twelve hour clock. After twelve hours the second tank is emptied and the process is begun again.
(三)A Coincidence
One day Mrs Jones goes to her usual place to practise golf. She likes the game, viewing it as a good way of losing weight.
The place is open and empty with a huge tree standing on a low hill. Mrs Jones places a ball on the ground. Aiming at the tree, she waves a club and gives the ball a stroke. The ball shoots forward and hits right the tree. To Mrs Jones surprise, the tree sways and falls down. She can hardly believe her eyes, wondering if the ball has hit the tree trunk so hard as to break it. Mrs Jones drags her clubs and runs towards where the tree stood. Out of breath, she gets over the hill and sees what has actually happened. Two workmen are trimming the tree trunk. It is they who have felled the tree with an axe. Mrs Jones stands there watching, wiping sweats on her face with her handkerchief.
(四)My First Swim in a pool
I did my first swimming in a pool last week. The pool was surrounded by a large dark green amphitheater which sloped steeply upward. Bands of lights overhead were turned off, and only the pool remained lighted, from below the surface. They glowed like a luminous, smoky, green-blue cloud suspended in a black cavern. I dived in. Amazingly, the light seemed to increase my ability to float. The water was cold, and it bore me up as though I was made of cork and could float forever.
Swimming in a pool gives me much pleasure. The water is tamed and imprisoned; the challenge has been filtered out of it along with bacteria. For me, the greatest pleasure is being in the calm water and having a sense of complete control of it.
(五)A Person I knew
Loose, wavy brown hair hung down to her waist at the back—she had a fringe over her forehead that almost hid her pale eyes. The nose—not her best feature—was long but not ugly. She had a regular set of white teeth and was full-lipped.
Her round face often looked rather sallow in complexion; she wasnt very tall or slim, and she walked with slightly-rounded shoulders. When I knew her, she must have been in her early thirties, about thirty-fifth even-and she even had one or two tell-tale wrinkles round the mouth.
(六)Evolving from Ape to Man
The ancestral apes already had large and high-quality brains. They had good eyes and efficient grasping hands. They inevitably had some degree of social organization. With strong pressure on them to increase their preykilling power, vital changes began to take place. They became more upright, and were faster, better runners. Their hands became strong, efficient weapon holders. Their brains became more complex, and developed into brighter, quicker decision-makers. But there developments did not follow one another in a major, set sequence; minute advances being made first in one quality and then in another, each urged the other on. A hunting ape, a killer ape, was in the making.
