❶ [U] 通道;通路;入径

The police gained access through a broken window. 警察从一扇破窗户里钻了进去。

2. adapt [ə̍dæpt]

❶ vt. 使适应;使合适

adapt oneself to 使……适应于

The film has been adapted from a play of the same title. 电影改编自一部同名戏剧。

3. adequate  [̍ædIkwət]

❶ adj. 足够的;适当的;恰当的

She didn’t give an adequate explanation for being late. 她没有给出充分的理由说明迟到的原因。

❷ adj. 胜任的

be adequate to / for 后面只跟名词或者人称代词的宾格,表示在某个方面是充足的,能胜任某项工作或某个职位。

He is adequate to the job. 他能胜任这项工作。

be adequate for 足够的

This is adequate for the purpose. 这足以达到目的。

易混辨析:adequate, enough与sufficient

这些形容词均含“足够的;充足的”之意。adequate指数量上足够,质量上适当。enough是最普通用词,口语、书面语可用,较侧重分量或数量的足够,多指希望的满足。sufficient是正式用词,侧重数目或数量或程度达到某一特定要求或需要。
