1. get the better of sb. 占上风,打败,支配

Triumph over sb.

e.g. Bill got the better of John in the boxing match.

2. better left unsaid 最好不说,不说为妙

[Refers to a topic that] should not be discussed in public, if at all

e.g. Before you say anything, remember some things are better left unsaid.

3. better safe than sorry 小心为妙,防患于未然

You should be cautious—if you are not, you may regret it.

e.g. It may be annoying to check the oil in your car every time you buy gas, but better safe than sorry.

4. better late than never 迟做(到)总比不做(到)好

Doing something late is better than not doing it at all

e.g. Sorry Im late for the party. But better late than never, right?

5. better luck next time 下次好运

An expression used to comfort or ridicule sb. [depending on tone] after a minor failure

e.g. I heard the bad news about the test. I hope you have better luck next time.

You thought you could beat me, you big loser? Better luck next time!
