Bill Weir

Host: By itself, a moment spent dancing with a U.S. President or 1)grilling a powerful tyrant would be enough to define a career in television news, but, for Barbara Walters, that describes a busy week. When it comes to the glass ceiling she shattered, the massive audiences her reporting reached, there will never be another like her, which is why her announcement this morning marks such a milestone, far beyond this building.

David Muir (Anchor and correspondent for ABC News): A rare glimpse into her dressing room, a television icon, a ground breaker about to break yet another headline and we asked how shes feeling.

Barbara: Its how Im going to feel then, and everybody says to me, “What are you gonna do next?”... I dont know.

David: Everything about it has been a groundbreaking run. Back on the Today show, when they were called “Today Girls,” she became co-host, the first woman to 2)co-anchor the evening news…

Voice: Barbara Walters.

David: …and then, of course, creating The View. But she will walk away from all of those cameras a year from now, but today she wanted her crew to hear it from her first.

Barbara: Why? Its time. I…I wanta leave while people say “Well miss her” instead of “Is she still here?” People say, “Who was your mentor?” I didnt have any. Today, if a young woman says, “I grew up watching you” or…or “You made it a little easier.” David, I think thats my legacy.

David: What has she taught you?

Joy Behar (Co-host, The View): You know, you always show up and never get sick and dont go to the bathroom either, because, if you go to the bathroom, that means youve missed the interview. Anne Sweeney (President, Disney/ABC Television Group): How she approached the truth, the number of people that she got to speak their truth in front of the camera; its astounding.

David: But all this time, one person, waiting. What has your daughter said to you about this decision?

Barbara: There were times when I feel I should have been with my daughter. I think every working mother has those days, but I think she wants me to stop working now, and spend more time with…with her, and I will.

David: And about not having a mentor; do you see women out there that you could look up to now?

Barbara: Its not just that I look up to them, Im so proud of them, like 3)Diane—Im very proud of her and very close to her—and 4)Robin, who has shown us all the kind of courage that so many of us really need.

David: Back stage, the mic, the cards, the TV earpiece, and she was off.

Barbara: So let me just say that—Huh! Take a breath. A year from now; I plan to retire from appearing on television at all.

David: Right there, her co-hosts, her viewers and her boss, who once delivered her the mail in 1976. Bob Iger, now the CEO of Disney.

Bob: I was asked to deliver something to your dressing room, and I 5)barged in, and there you were. I was rather embarrassed…

Barbara: Was I nice, I hope?

Bob: You were extremely nice. You asked me what my name was and what did I do, and I told you, and from then on you called me Jim. My name is Bob.

Barbara: Thank you, Jim. It means…

David: But, amid the laughter, a sincere thank-you to the viewers who have witnessed the world with her.

Barbara: Weve been together a long time. My cup runneth over. I thank you, thank you, thank you.
