Chinese President Xi JinPing Meets withIndian Prime Minister Modi in Brazil

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with IndianPrime Minister Narendra Modi in Brasilia, capitalof Brazil, on November 13, 2019, saying he is willingto maintain close communication with Modi toguide a better and m()re stable development ofChina-India relations.

The two leaders held an informal meetingin October 2019 in the southern Indian city ofChennai. Xi said the meeting was a success, notingthat they made in-depth exchanges of views onglobal and regional situation as well as majorissues of bilateral ties.

Xi said that relevant departments of the twocountries are implementing their consensusreached during the Chennai meeting to sustain andexpand its positive effeects.

India participated in the second ChinaInternational Import Expo (CIIE) as a main guestof honor, Xi said, noting that he was told thatIndia was the country with the largest increase intransaction volume at the expo compared with 2018.

China welcomes more exports of India's high-quality products to its market, the president said,calling on the two countries to expand two-way tradeand investment and create new growth points forcooperation in productivity, medicine, informationtechnology, infrastructure and other fields.

Recalling his previous meetings with Xi in Wuhanin April 2018 and in Chennai in October 2019, Modisaid trust and friendship between them have beenstrengthened and many important consensusesreached by them are being implemented.

India congratulates China on the success of thesecond CIIE, Modi said, stressing that the countryis ready to expand bilateral trade and investmentwith china and enhance their cooperation inenergy and other fields.

He added that India is ready to work withChina to make the activities celebrating the70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties and theChina-India year of cultural and people-to-peopleexchanges a success.

The Indian prime minister stressed that he islooking forward to keeping close contacts with Xiand properly managing differences, so that bilateralties can be more fruitful and reach a new height.

The Plan for Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of China India Ties Released

In order to celebrate the 70thanniversary of the establishment ofdiplomatic relations between thePeople's Republic of China and theRepublic of India, Chinese PresidentXi Jinping and Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi agreed during theirsecond informal meeting in Chennaito hold 70 celebratory activities in thetwo countries, which will not onlyunveil the historical links of two ofthe world's oldest civilizations andthe progress of the two countries'relations, but also strengthenexchanges between legislative bodies,business circles, academic circles,youth, defense ministries and others.The two sides have agreed to holdthese activities from January 2020 toMarch 2021.

Fourth india-China Think Tank Forum Held in Beijing

The fourth India-China Think TankForum, sponsored by the chineseAcademy of Social Sciences (CASS) andthe Indian Ministry of External Affairs,was held in Beijing from November 28t0 29, 2019. The forum was joined byCASS President Xie Fuzhan, ChineseVice Foreign Minister Luo zhaohui,and Director General of the IndianCouncil for World Affairs Dr. T.C.A.Raghavan as well as over 150 expertsand scholars from China and India.Closer china-lndia ties, developmentstrategies and development experienceof the two countries, and culturalexchanges are among the topicsdiscussed at the forum.

"Hand-in-Hand 2019" Anti-terrorismJoint Exercise Held in India

"Hand-in-Hand 2019," a China-India jointcounter-terrorism exercise, was held in Indiafrom December 7 to 20, 2019. China and India each sent 130 officers andsoldiers, who formed ajoint training unitthat completed the three-phase training. Since 2007, Chinese and Indian militarieshave conducted joint counter-terrorismtrainings eight times. Those trainingprograms promoted exchanges andincreased mutual trust between the twomilitaries. They demonstrated the resolve ofthe two countries to work together to combatterrorism, and their good wish to maintainregional peace and stabilitv.

22nd Meeting of SpeecialRepresentatives of China and IndiaHeld in New Delhi

On December 21, 2019, the 22nd meetingof the Special Representatives of china andIndia was held in New Delhi. It was co-chaired by Chinese Special Representative,State Councilor and Foreign Minister WangYi and Indian Special Representative andNational Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

The two sides exchanged views on theearly returns of positive results from theboundary negotiations and reached aconsensus on strengthening confidence-building measures. They agreed to formulatemanagement rules for maintaining peaceand tranquility in the border areas. Theyalso agreed to strengthen communicationand exchanges between the border forces ofthe two countries, set up hotlines betweenthe relevant departments of the twoarmed forces, add border meeting points,and expand border trade and personnelexchanges. Both sides agreed to hold the23rd meeting of the Special Representativesof China and India in China in 2020.

Indian Vice President Naidu MeetsWang Yi

On December 21, 2019, India's VicePresident and Ex-officio chairman of theRajya Sabha Venkaiah Naidu met withChina's State Councilor and Foreign MinisterWang Yi in New Delhi.

India-China friendship has a long history,said Naidu, and both countries are ancientcivilizations as well as the two most populousnations in the world. They are also thetwo fastest-growing emerging economies.Leaders of India and China reached animportant consensus that both sides shoulddeal with differences and sensitive issueswell, and not allow differences to rise intodisputes. He added that the Indian sideis willing to take the 70th anniversary ofthe establishment of diplomatic relationsbetween the two countries as an opportunityto strengthen high-level exchanges, deepenpragmatic cooperation, strengthen people-to-people exchanges, and push India-Chinarelations to a new level. India pursues a good-neighborly foreign policy, and is willing towork with China to safeguard regional andworld peace and stability.

Wang Yi said that Chinese PresidentXi Jinping and Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi successfully held theirsecond informal summit in Chennai,which pointed out the direction for thedevelopment of Sino-Indian relationsand reached an important consensus onthe proper settlement of the boundaryquestion. He added that 2020 marks the70th anniversary of the establishmentof diplomatic relations between Chinaand India. and our bilateral relations arefacing new opportunities for development.Both sides have agreed and announced 70celebratory events. The next step is to takethe 70th anniversary of the establishmentof diplomatic relations as an opportunityto deepen mutually beneficial cooperationand people-to-people exchanges, so as toconsolidate the social foundation of thefriendship between the two countries.
