1 Research Methods

We mainly used three methods.

1.1 Personal interview

We chose and interviewed six different occupations of people from different generations. The six occupations include: farmer(1960s), accountant(1970s), judge(1970s), programmer

(1980s), soldier(1980s), teacher(1990s).

We mainly asked them three questions:(1)Why did you choose this profession? Is it out of interest?(2)Do you feel happy to do your present job, why?(3)Whats your plan about your job in future?

1.2 Data collection and analysis

We collect their answers and analyze these data. According to it, we could get some data that only 1/3 people choose their jobs out of interests and the rest out of the living pressure; 1/3 people feel happy to do their jobs; only 1/6 people have a clearly plan about their future work, the others are have some basic ideas.

1.3 Comparison and contrast

During our investigation,we also compared the differences between the four generations.

2 Findings

From the pervious part, we can detect that most people among our interviewees choose their jobs not out of interest. Moreover, the most influential factor is the pressure from eternal environment such like the employment pressure or the financial stress.

The person whose job is his interest is more likely to feel happy at their working than those who choose their job just because of eternal pressure. However, its some people who collected their job out of interest who arent feel happy in their job any more after experiencing so many years chores in their work. The reason of some people feeling unsatisfactory about their job is that they dont achieve fulfillment or the job cant offer a promoted opportunity. So based on our search, we can speculate that most people in our society just treat their job as a way to live on not a way to fulfill themselves. Even for those who love their job at first, its hard to keep passion and enjoyment towards their job all the time. The unsatisfactory about the job also leads to the unhappiness.

The minority of people have clear future blueprint. Most of people just express that theyll try the best to work but nothing more. Because many of our interviewees are married, they all said that theyd transform the focus to their family appropriately. But this finding may not be universal.

Another finding is about the different views of different times. The interviewees involved are from different eras of China. The 60s generation, which didnt have many opportunity to be educated, also had few alternatives on choosing jobs. So most of 60s generation chose to be a farmer to solve the most fundamental problem—to live. When it comes to 70s, its a golden age for college students. On one hand, the competitors were much less than nowadays, on the other hand, the government took the employment distribution policy that most elites could get a good job, even if they hadnt spent lots of energy. So the 80s generally worked on something related to their original major. The next generation—80s—would face an unprecedented employment pressure. Firstly, they must find job by themselves. Secondly, more and more people chose to receive higher education. Under fierce competition, most of them chose to find a relatively satisfactory work then considered about changing job. With the development of our society, the 90s seems like more open about job. Compared with choosing a nine-to-five job, they preferred to follow their interest and do what they really like.

3 Conclusion

The fulfillment obtained through work didnt, unfortunately, stand out in the findings. Visibly,“we cant find a job we like” has been an ingrained notion all over the society. As work is set in the center of our life in most times, we need to consider how to shift this unblissful situation.

Since were not happy now, then consider why we chose it previously. According to the data and its analysis, both external and internal factors were taken into consideration when we made decisions on careers. Lets get the root exposed. External factors, since we are social animals, consist of the economic development,work-related policies, competition environment and our families. Meanwhile, internal factors, such as future plans and personal concepts also take a vital role in decision-making.

Its true that only if we could combine our interests and occupations, we were more likely to be into our work and life. However, its not true of the society and reality at the most times. Consequently, we can settle down to transform the impact of the related factors from negative to positive. As it known to us, its impossible for our country to deliver directly more jobs to us. Instead, China can clearly express positive attitude toward business startups and pump out more investments relatively. Whats more, the government can accelerate the development of emerging industries and provide more occupations, of which the courier serves as a good example. Although factors of competition environment and families are listed as external, people should consciously strengthen themselves from now on and be capable of leading the whole family in a cheerful way, not just to be drawn back by the pressure of supporting our families.

As for the internal factors influence shifting, to a single person, it is never too early to establish the goal and future program. Chances are for those who make full preparation. In that case we can conquer obstacles of external factors. At the same time, that a large amount of people chose a “whatever” work results from the thought that they will have access to a better one in the future, which ends up keeping and complaining. It doesnt mean we are required to keep a job in the life long, but every time we select work, we should take considerable factors into account, as if its our final choice. At the meantime, wed better remind us of the shining points of our work regularly. Its a home truth.

Thats not enough. Some of our specimen express that they dislike their jobs partly because it is not well organized and sometimes gets repeated again and again. Whats worse, they can hardly see the space of improvement and chance of promotion. Here, the reward power and incentives in companies are urgently called for. And employees are in badly need of one more efficient working style. They want to do something, not just get something done.

In conclusion, all of us held the view that work should make us happy, when few of us can articulate it. To shift this unblissful situation, all, including the society, companies, and us - workers, are appealed to take their own efforts.
