Dashing into Selfridges on Christmas Eve, BBC cameraman1) Michael Bond finds a lone bear left on the shelves and buys it for his wife as a last-minute gift. Named Paddington after the station close to Bond's home, something about the bear inspires him to write eight episodes about his adventures in just over a week.

Bond's first book, A Bear Called Paddington, is published. A stowaway2) from Peru, Paddington is sent to Britain by his aunt Lucy armed with marmalade3) sandwiches for food. He's found near the lost property office at the station by the Brown family, who adopt him. Unsurprising to Bond, the book sells out before Christmas. "I had a feeling Paddington would be successful," he says.

Created by Shirley Clarkson (mother of Top Gear's4) Jeremy Clarkson), the first soft toy goes on sale. After coming to an amicable5) agreement over royalties6), Bond and the Clarksons become firm friends—and when Shirley designs a Paddington with wellington boots (so he can stand on display shelves), Bond dutifully writes about his first pair of wellies7) in the next book.

Produced by Bond and animation company FilmFair, Paddington's first TV series comes to BBC 1. Narrated by English actor Michael Hordern, Paddington appears as a 3D puppet, while other characters are paper cut-outs8). These five-minute episodes are sold worldwide, turning the polite but accident-prone9) bear into a global star.

US animation studio Hanna-Barbera gets hold of Paddington, creating a cartoon series, complete with a new American cousin10) of the Brown family for US audiences. The series is also shown on ITV but, for many, there is no replacing the charm of the original.

Paddington does his bit11) for entente cordiale12) as he becomes the first item chosen by English tunnellers13) to pass through to their French counterparts when the two sides of the Channel Tunnel are linked up. In the same year, Bond opens the Paddington Bear memorabilia14) stand at Paddington Station.

To commemorate where he was first found by the Browns, Bond unveils a life-sized bronze statue of his creation in Paddington Station. Designed by the sculptor Marcus Cornish, Paddington sits on his battered15) suitcase, with the "Please look after this bear" sign around his neck.

Starting the hype16) early, Warner Bros, together with Harry Potter producer David Heyman and screenwriter Hamish McColl, declare that work has begun on the screenplay for a Paddington film. The film "will draw inspiration from the whole series" of books, they say.

To celebrate the bear's 50th birthday, Bond, now 82, gives us his first Paddington novel in nearly 30 years—Paddington Here and Now. Topically, in the first story, Paddington is questioned by police about his refugee status. "It is a very different world to the world of the original book," says Bond.

Appealing to our national obsession with the celebrity chef17), Paddington brings out a cookery18) book featuring treats such as sticky marmalade sausages, bear-shaped cookies and Aunt Lucy's guacamole19).

In the run-up20) to the film's release, 50 different Paddington statues are placed in and around London landmarks from November 4. Designed by celebs such as David Beckham, Benedict Cumberbatch, Liam Gallagher and cricketer Ian Botham, the statues are then auctioned for children's charity. On November 6, Bond gives Paddington the pen for the first time in Love from Paddington—a collection of letters to Aunt Lucy, telling her of his adventures. Together the Paddington books have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and been translated into 30 languages. On November 28, Paddington is brought to life in CGI. This live-action, British-made comedy is set to take our favourite bear's fame to a whole new level.
